Sir,
Latin America’s political shift toward center-right governments and the adoption of more investment-friendly policies has become increasingly evident in recent years. This trend, reflected in the presidential elections of countries such as Peru, Colombia, and previously Argentina, raises an important question: how could this new regional landscape impact Chile?
While political and economic transformations take time to materialize, government terms are not particularly long. Peru has already begun to move in this direction, with newly elected President Fujimori announcing an immediate strategy to attract investment. Argentina has followed a similar path through stabilization measures and guarantees for foreign investors. Although Colombia has not yet announced specific initiatives on this matter, current signals suggest that it may pursue a comparable approach.
In this context, the implications for Chile are clear. The region could become increasingly attractive to foreign investors, making tax competitiveness a critical factor in attracting and retaining capital. As neighboring countries implement policies designed to encourage investment, Chile will face growing competition for international business and economic development opportunities.
For this reason, the approval of the measures included in the proposed Mega Reform becomes particularly important, especially those aimed at reducing the corporate tax rate to enhance Chile’s competitiveness and improve after-tax returns for businesses. Likewise, tax stability will be essential. Providing clear and predictable tax rules is critical for companies making long-term investment decisions, particularly in light of recent statements from sectors of Chile’s political left indicating their intention to reverse parts of the reform in the coming years.
A stable, competitive, and predictable tax framework is not only desirable but necessary if Chile seeks to maintain its position as an attractive destination for investment in an increasingly competitive regional environment.
