April has arrived, bringing with it the inevitable task of filing the annual tax return. For many taxpayers, the 2024 Tax Filing Process can be a source of stress and confusion. From understanding forms to gathering the necessary documentation, the process may seem overwhelming and, at times, intimidating.

The complexity of the tax code and the constant evolution of regulations can make even the most experienced taxpayers feel uncertain. Therefore, understanding the basics and adopting effective strategies can make the difference between a successful filing and an unnecessary headache.

From the technical details of Form 22 to the specific requirements for each type of taxpayer, there is a broad range of knowledge that individuals and companies must master to successfully navigate this tax challenge.

Form 22

Form 22 is one of the available options for completing this tax process. It can be filled out through the Internal Revenue Service (SII) website using a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

To do so, users must access “Online Services,” click on “Income Tax Return,” and select the option “File Tax Return (F22).” It can also be completed through the Tax Portal. In both cases, the system will require a Tax ID (RUT) and Tax Password or Unique Key.

Once the tax year is selected, Form 22 will appear either blank or pre-filled. It is the responsibility of each taxpayer to confirm or modify the proposed information. When fully pre-filled, the SII completes the form using information provided by withholding agents through sworn statements.

In partially completed cases, Form 22 will include some pre-filled codes highlighted for verification, allowing the taxpayer to confirm whether they correspond to the income received during the previous year and/or to applicable tax credits or benefits, before completing any missing data.

“For the Tax Filing Process, it is essential that individuals are informed about the information they will submit or review at each stage,” said the National Taxpayer Advocate, Ricardo Pizarro.

e-Renta App

The e-Renta application offers a convenient and accessible way to complete the tax return using information provided by the SII.

Available for download on the App Store and Play Store, the app allows individuals with residence in Chile to access their proposals starting April 1, provided they do not need to supplement information or use calculation assistants, such as those for stock sales or education expense credits.

Recommendations for completing the tax filing process

Christian Delcorto, Partner of Tax Consulting and Compliance at CCL Auditores Consultores, provided several tips for successfully completing the tax return:

File Form 22 in advance: In April, the SII offers incentives for individuals to file early and receive faster refunds. “We recommend filing between the third and fourth week of April, as companies often amend their sworn statements, which may change the information considered by the SII,” Delcorto explained. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

Electronic deposit: Choosing to receive refunds via electronic bank transfer instead of checks speeds up the process and reduces the risk of loss.

Verification of tax debts: It is essential for individuals to check with the General Treasury (TGR) whether they have any outstanding tax debts, in order to settle them or arrange payment plans before receiving their refund. “If there are outstanding debts, the TGR will offset the retained amount, covering not only the principal but also any associated penalties and interest, which could result in a lower refund,” he added.
